Dear Neighbors,
Our church building has been used for many neighborhood meetings. We are starting other activities there that we think may interest you. The first series of events will be called “DABBLERS’ WEEK”. To dabble means to “try your hand at”, “experiment with” or “dip into”. We will be dabbling in a variety of topics during the week of August 22 –27.
1. EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS PLANNING MEETING. 7:00 p.m. Aug. 22. We will hear from Debbie Geotz, of Seattle Emergency Management, how we as neighbors in community can prepare ourselves for emergencies like heat waves, ice storms, earthquakes, etc. This hour-long meeting will help us to become a SNAP (Seattle Neighborhoods Actively Prepared). Childcare will be provided.
2. FINANCIAL PEACE UNIVERSITY. 7:00 p.m. Aug. 27 OR Aug. 29. Maybe you’ve heard Dave Ramsey speak on radio or read one of his books. One brochure says, “The average family eliminates $5,300 in debt while saving $2,700 through the series “Financial Peace University”. During Dabblers’ Week, Gary and Eleanor Zweigle, certified FPU trainers from Olympia, will show videos and answer questions about the 9-week course that will begin in October. Come and bring the whole family to dabble in this! There is no obligation to continue the training.
3. A WINTER SALAD BOWL. 4:00 p.m. Aug. 25 OR 5:00 p.m. Aug. 27. Learn tips on planting “container gardens” Have you seen Michelle Obama’s brand new book, American Grown, the story of the White House Kitchen Garden and Gardens across America? She says, “Container gardens are a great alternative when you don’t have time or space to plant an in-ground garden. If you have a sunny windowsill, patio or balcony, you can grow your own bountiful harvest” (p58). Our guide for this dabbling experience will be Sheryl Irwin-Ice, who, by the way, works in the air controller tower at SeaTac airport! Parents are encouraged to bring their children. Helpers will be present.
4. THE PURPOSE-DRIVEN LIFE. 6:00 p.m. Aug. 25 OR 5:00 p.m. Aug. 27. You’ve probably seen this best-selling book at bookstores or even supermarkets. It deals with the most fundamental questions of life: What is life all about? What are we here for? This one-hour introduction, won’t answer these questions! But it will give you opportunity to meet others who are interested in the dialogue. This event will be led by Jon Paul Scott, a Peace Corps’ Volunteer in the 60s and experienced in intercultural communication. Childcare will be available.
5. THE WORLD OF THE PORTUGUESE DISCOVERIES. 7:00 p.m. Aug. 24 OR 4:00 p.m. Aug. 26. Did you know that the small country of Portugal ruled the seas and established a vast overseas empire in the 15th & 16th centuries, bringing back to their homeland plants, spices and drinks from all around the world? Dabble in the sights and sounds of this world with Dr. Margaret Scott, who has lived in Brazil, the Azores, Portugal and Mozambique. Childcare will be available.
