Sign up for Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University

A cordial group of neighbors gathered this evening, Aug. 29, for the introductory overview and initial registration for the 9 weeks of classes of Financial Peace University that start on Sept. 26th from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. Others can still join the class by registering on line at http://www.daveramsey.com/fpu/locations/org/41847/class/217210/atid/m_mi by Sept. 12th which will permit time for the kits to be shipped to the facilitators. The one-time fee for a family lifetime course is $91.00. Discounts are available through Pastor Terry at 4201 SW Juneau, Seattle, WA 98136.

The kit includes a book, workbook, envelop, audio cd of the video class, for reviewing the principles presented on the video. One kit will be used by everyone in the same family. The two-hour class sessions will consist of video teaching lessons by Dave Ramsey who is very engaging and down to earth, followed by an hour long break out session. The 9-week course is rich in information and extremely practical covering subjects like , "how to get out of credit card debt", how to build an emergency fund, etc.

The Facilitators of this class are Gary and Eleanor Zweigle, who are so convinced of the value of the course that they volunteered to drive from their home in Olympia to teach the 9 sessions in West Seattle! That says something, doesn't it? They have facilitated the course three other times -- in Olympia.

Don't miss this opportunity to achieve peace in your finances! Register today.

Reflections on the first K-Board Trustees' Meeting

It is very clear that God has His hand on the ministry called “Kaleidoscope” because He brought together a group of men and women for our organizational meeting who has the knowledge and skills needed to launch it.  After brief introductions, Margaret Scott shared how she and Jon came to West Seattle, and the goal of Kaleidoscope - which is to provide a model of ministry that developing leaders can replicate, to train emerging leaders, especially those of ethnic minorities, and to help local churches like West Seattle engage their communities.

As the discussion got underway Dr. Woody Self, former President of Malone College and professor of business, showed us what we needed to do in order to accomplish a great deal of what was on our agenda.  He stated that the board should be structured in such a way that will allow the leaders to do what they are passionate about and told us that the more focus we have the more successful Kaleidoscope will be.  Dr. Self committed to overseeing the filing for the 501c3.  He also recommended that we elect our CEO, Secretary, and Treasurer as our beginning officers.  Margaret Scott was elected CEO, Eleanor Zweigle Secretary, and Debra Voelker Treasurer.

Following Dr. Self’s instructions to clarify our mission statement, a sub committee made up of Jon and Margaret Scott, Pastors Chuck Judd and Terry Matson, and businessman Randall Davey will meet to formulate the mission and vision casting of Kaleidoscope.
After our meeting we all felt that Kaleidoscope has taken a great surge forward and we are excited to see what God will bring about as we continue to pray and follow His leading for this ministry.

DABBLERS' WEEK at West Seattle Church of the Nazarene

The West Seattle Church of the Nazarene is birthing a new NGO, an official Washington 501(c)3 called...Kaleidoscope. This is the letter that is going to neighbors today. You will enjoy updates. Keep watching!

                                 Aug. 7, 2012
Dear Neighbors,

Our church building has been used for many neighborhood meetings. We are starting other activities there that we think may interest you. The first series of events will be called “DABBLERS’ WEEK”. To dabble means to “try your hand at”, “experiment with” or “dip into”. We will be dabbling in a variety of topics during the week of August 22 –27.

1.     EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS PLANNING MEETING. 7:00 p.m. Aug. 22. We will hear from Debbie Geotz, of Seattle Emergency Management, how we as neighbors in community can prepare ourselves for emergencies like heat waves, ice storms, earthquakes, etc. This hour-long meeting will help us to become a SNAP (Seattle Neighborhoods Actively Prepared). Childcare will be provided.

     2. FINANCIAL PEACE UNIVERSITY. 7:00 p.m. Aug. 27 OR Aug. 29. Maybe you’ve heard Dave Ramsey speak on radio or read one of his books. One brochure says, “The average family eliminates $5,300 in debt while saving $2,700 through the series “Financial Peace University”. During Dabblers’ Week, Gary and Eleanor Zweigle, certified FPU trainers from Olympia, will show videos and answer questions about the 9-week course that will begin in October. Come and bring the whole family to dabble in this! There is no obligation to continue the training.

     3. A WINTER SALAD BOWL. 4:00 p.m. Aug. 25 OR 5:00 p.m. Aug. 27. Learn tips on planting “container gardens” Have you seen Michelle Obama’s brand new book, American Grown, the story of the White House Kitchen Garden and Gardens across America? She says, “Container gardens are a great alternative when you don’t have time or space to plant an in-ground garden. If you have a sunny windowsill, patio or balcony, you can grow your own bountiful harvest” (p58). Our guide for this dabbling experience will be Sheryl Irwin-Ice, who, by the way, works in the air controller tower at SeaTac airport! Parents are encouraged to bring their children. Helpers will be present.

     4. THE PURPOSE-DRIVEN LIFE. 6:00 p.m. Aug. 25 OR 5:00 p.m. Aug. 27. You’ve probably seen this best-selling book at bookstores or even supermarkets. It deals with the most fundamental questions of life: What is life all about? What are we here for?  This one-hour introduction, won’t answer these questions! But it will give you opportunity to meet others who are interested in the dialogue. This event will be led by Jon Paul Scott, a Peace Corps’ Volunteer in the 60s and experienced in intercultural communication. Childcare will be available.

     5. THE WORLD OF THE PORTUGUESE DISCOVERIES. 7:00 p.m. Aug. 24 OR 4:00 p.m. Aug. 26. Did you know that the small country of Portugal ruled the seas and established a vast overseas empire in the 15th & 16th centuries, bringing back to their homeland plants, spices and drinks from all around the world? Dabble in the sights and sounds of this world with Dr. Margaret Scott, who has lived in Brazil, the Azores, Portugal and Mozambique. Childcare will be available.

Sincerely,
Rev. Terry Mattson
Pastor
